A two-phase heuristic evolutionary algorithm for personalizing course timetables: a case study in a Spanish university

چکیده
This paper presents, as a case study, the application of a two-phase heuristic evolutionary algorithm to obtain personalized timetables in a Spanish university. The algorithm consists of a two-phase heuristic, which, starting from an initial ordering of the students, allocates students into groups, taking into account the student’s preferences as a primal factor for the assignment. An evolutionary algorithm is then used in order to select the ordering of students which provides the best assignment. The algorithm has been tested in a real problem, the timetable of the Telecommunication Engineering School at Universidade de Vigo (Spain), and has shown good performance in terms of the number of constraints ful6lled and groups assigned to students. ? 2004 Elsevier Ltd. A discrete-event optimization framework for mixed-speed train timetabling problem
Railway scheduling is a complex task of rail operators that involves the generation of a conflict-free train timetable. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation-based optimization approach for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize total weighted unplanned stop time in a hybrid single and double track railway networks. The designed simulation model is used as a platform for ge...
متن کاملDesigning a Meta-Heuristic Algorithm Based on a Simple Seeking Logic
Nowadays, in majority of academic contexts, it has been tried to consider the highest possible level of similarities to the real world. Hence, most of the problems have complicated structures. Traditional methods for solving almost all of the mathematical and optimization problems are inefficient. As a result, meta-heuristic algorithms have been employed increasingly during recent years. In thi...
متن کاملDesign of Manufacturing Cells with Two- Phase Model and A Heuristic Algorithm
A Two-phase model for configuring a cellular manufacturing system is proposed. In phase (I), for the first time, number of cells is considered as a decision variable. In phase (II), pursing two different objectives, one minimization of underload and the other, maximization of similarity of parts within a group, the design procedure is performed. As one cannot have these two objects together, a ...
متن کاملA Two-Phase Hybrid Heuristic Method for a Multi-Depot Inventory-Routing Problem
In this study, a two phase hybrid heuristic approach was proposed to solve the multi-depot multi-vehicle inventory routing problem (MDMVIRP). Inventory routing problem (IRP) is one of the major issues in the supply chain networks that arise in the context of vendor managed systems (VMI) The MDMVIRP combines inventory management and routing decision. We are given on input a fleet of homogeneous ...
متن کاملEvolutionary Non-linear Great Deluge for University Course Timetabling
This paper presents a hybrid evolutionary algorithm to tackle university course timetabling problems. The proposed approach is an extension of a non-linear great deluge algorithm in which evolutionary operators are incorporated. First, we generate a population of feasible solutions using a tailored process that incorporates heuristics for graph colouring and assignment problems. That initialisa...
